Lemon glaze ingredients
- Icing sugar – Whether you call it as icing sugar or confectioners sugar or powdered sugar, all are same. Buy from any grocery store and make your icing sugar at home.
- Lemon juice – As the name suggests, this is the main ingredient of our recipe. You can use store-bought lemon juice but I would recommend using fresh lemon juice for intense lemon flavors.
- Milk – You use either full fat or 2% milk, whichever is available at your home. For a dairy-free version, use water instead.
Any substitute?
- Lemon zest – You can add a teaspoon of lemon zest to boost the lemon flavor.
- Water – Replace milk with water to make it dairy-free.
- Sugar-free – Replace icing sugar with a sugar-free substitute in a 1:1 ratio. Make sure your sugar-free option dissolves and has the same consistency as icing sugar. If it is in crystal form then ground it to fine powder and use it.

- Measuring Spoons
- Weighing Scale
- Sieve
Lemon glaze (step-by-step) recipe
- Take fine sieve and add powdered sugar. Gently tap on the sieve so that powdered sugar falls through without lumps. You can also use a whisk if you wish to. This gives a smooth finish to our lemon glaze.
- Now add lemon juice and 1/2 tablespoons of milk. Gently mix using a whisk until well combined. The consistency should be thick, not too watery. Hence it is recommended to start by adding a small amount of liquid to the icing sugar, then check the consistency, and add more if necessary.
- The lemon glaze is ready.
How to serve?
Use this lemon glaze over your lemon cake recipe like shown above. Once the cake is cooled down completely, pour the lemon glaze on top, letting it drip down from the sides. For a smooth finish, do not spread using a spoon. If the glaze is thick then add 1/2 teaspoon of milk and check again.

Storing and freezing instructions for lemon glaze recipe
Similar to my orange glaze recipe, I would not recommend storing or freezing this recipe as it hardens after some time. And, anyway, it will not take much of your time so, I strongly recommend making it fresh.
Secret tips to make lemon glaze recipe
- Sieve icing sugar – Icing sugar tends to form lumps. Store-bought icing sugar contains cornstarch to prevent lumps but still, you never know. For smooth and lump-free lemon glaze, please sift the icing sugar at least once.
- Add a little liquid – The consistency of the lemon glaze should be thick yet pourable. Adding all liquid (milk and lemon juice) at once may result in a runny glaze.
- Use immediately – As I mentioned above, glaze hardens after a few minutes, so use it as soon as it is ready. So, make sure your cakes are cooled down completely before preparing the glaze.
