A beautifully decorated cake is always the center of attraction in any celebration, whether it is a birthday, a baby shower, a wedding, or simply a family gathering. Usually, these cakes are filled and frosted with buttercream frosting as they stay out longer. Do you agree? I will give you all the tips and tricks on how to store cake with buttercream frosting.
Most of the time, when the celebration is over, I always wonder what to do with leftover cake as it's impossible to finish it on that day. And I am sure most of you must have faced a similar situation. So, it is a good idea to know how to store it so that you can enjoy it the next day or next week.
A buttercream frosted cake is nothing but a layer cake that is filled and frosted with rich and smooth buttercream frosting. It can be either American buttercream, swiss meringue buttercream, or any other type mentioned here. The cake be of different flavors like vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, or lemon.
Any buttercream you choose, it will be rich, creamy, and primarily made from butter and icing sugar and enhanced with different flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, or lemon to name a few. This frosting is easily spreadable and pipeable. Hence, it is a very popular choice amongst the bakers.
Now if you compare plain cake and cake with buttercream frosting, you know who is going to win the race :). A buttercream frosted cake is surely going to impress the guests because of it's taste and it's appearance.
Storing a buttercream cake is essential for many reasons mentioned below.
There are many ways to store buttercream frosted cake depending on when you want to consume it.
You can store it at room temperature if you are consuming in 2 to 3 days. To consure within 5 to 7 days, I recommend refrigerating it and to consure in a couple of months, freeze the cake.

You can store the buttercream frosted cake at room temperature either in an airtight container or by covering it using cake dome.
The only drawback of covering it with dome is its difficult to cover when the height of a cake is tall so in that case, cut the cake in individual slices and store in an airtight container when it is of 4 or more layers.
Also, keep in mind to store it in cool and dry place and away from direct sunlight. Why? it is made up of butter and direct sunlight may melt the frosting, simple 🙂.
You might wonder if we can store the buttercream frosted cake at room temperature, then why do we.need to refrigerate it?
We need to refrigerate the cake when the weather is warm or when you eant to enjoyleftovercake forlong period of time.
Cut the cake in an individual slices, then wrap with with cling wrap and then place them in an airtight container. If you want to store the individual slices directly in an airtight container then place a layer of parchment paper between them to avoid sticking. You can refrigerate the cake for a week.
To preserve the cake for months, the only option you will have is to freeze them.
First place the buttercream frosted cake in freezer until the buttercream hardens.
Now cut it in individual slices, cover with plastic wrap followed by aluminum foil and freeze in an airtight container or freezer-safe Ziplock bags. Do not forget to mention the date on aluminum foil.
To thaw the buttercream frosted cake, either place an individual piece in the refrigerator overnight or directly place on the kitchen counter for 2 to 3 hours and you are good to go.

So, after thawing cake properly bring it to room temperature and serve right away.
